Urban Cube Regensburg
Exterior Gendai Cladding
Regensburg, Germany
Project Overview
This new headquarters and showroom of a leading German retailer in Regensburg stands out through its striking architecture and refined material concept. Designed with clarity and precision, the building combines functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic excellence.
The upper façade is clad with Gendai by Nakamoto Forestry, a refined version of the Japanese Yakisugi or Shou Sugi Ban technique. The deeply textured yet smooth charred wood cladding of Japanese cedar creates a timeless black surface with subtle reflections that shift with natural light. Combined with exposed concrete and large glass openings, it forms a dynamic contrast between tradition and modernity, nature and urban design.
This project demonstrates how charred timber siding can be successfully applied in large-scale commercial architecture. Beyond its visual appeal, Gendai offers exceptional durability, weather resistance, and minimal maintenance—qualities highly valued in contemporary building design.
In Regensburg, Japanese craftsmanship meets German engineering, creating a bold, enduring example of modern architecture with Shou Sugi Ban wood.
