Japan meets Italy – Nakamoto Forestry at Architect@Work Milan

Milan – a city synonymous with modern design and one of the world’s fashion capitals – proved the perfect backdrop for a remarkable encounter: the authentic craft of Japanese Yakisugi meeting Italian design finesse. Our presence at Architect@Work Milan went far beyond a simple exhibition stand. It was a creative exchange rooted in cultural appreciation and architectural vision.

Yakisugi meets Italian style

Timber façades never go out of style. A charred timber surface with this ancient Japanese technique adds depth and character to contemporary architecture. This process, known as Yakisugi, is making waves across Europe, offering a visually compelling and highly durable cladding option. Among the popular materials are burnt larch cladding and burnt cedar, each providing its own unique look and performance.

New face for Italy: Akira Czarnetki

A highlight of the event was introducing Akira Czarnetzki, our new representative for the Italian market. Born in Japan and now based in Italy for over a decade, Akira seamlessly bridges cultural contexts. With a strong background in architecture studios and a trained eye for design, he brings invaluable insight to our European team.

“Yakisugi is more than a material – it’s cultural heritage that gives depth to contemporary architecture. I look forward to sharing this aesthetic with Italian architects.”
— AKIRA CZARNETZKI, Sales Partner Italy

His deep appreciation for craftsmanship and passion for architecture make Akira the ideal link between Nakamoto’s heritage and Italy’s design-driven market.

Milan as design compass

This year’s Architect@Work confirmed again: Yakisugi is not confined to traditional aesthetics. Especially in Milan – where materials must tell stories and every detail matters – our charred timber made a lasting impression. Hundreds of the 3,300 trade visitors explored our surfaces and found inspiration in their understated, natural beauty.

For architects who seek soulful materials – seamlessly blending into both minimalist and expressive concepts – Yakisugi remains an invitation to elevate design through material authenticity.
