Yakisugi

Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban)

The black Yakisugi wood (also called Shou Sugi Ban in the west) is created with a special technique from Japan. This type of treatment for timber has been in use there since the 18th century. The name roughly translates to “burned cypress plank” and thus already hints at the method of treatment. To create Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) the base material is charred and in addition to its color also gains a variety of additional, useful properties. For our Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) we use the original Japanese cypress and process it with precision in the way of the traditional craft. The result is astounding and visibly different from regular wooden furniture and cladding types.

Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) – Why is this black wood so special?

Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) is special for more than just its color. Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) is created by deliberately charring the surface of the wood, although only the upper layer of the material is affected. The material is not burned. Thus it undergoes a carbonization process and the surface structure is fundamentally changed. Thanks to this unique surface structure Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) becomes water repellent, more robust and therefore more durable. Additionally the black wood is naturally resistant towards insects and rot. For products intended for interior applications, the coal layer is additionally fixed in order to achieve a better durability when touched.

For our Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) we swear by the original, made of Japanese cypress wood. It’s possible to apply this technique to European timber as well, but the Japanese cypress has several material advantages in comparison to domestic wood types and thus we want to focus on the traditional type as it is used in Japan. Unlike surface layer imitations our Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) as a renewable resource has an outstandingly low carbon footprint. Additionally this method does not require the use of chemicals and solvents that could affect health. Like this, a unique combination of form and function is achieved which will be convincing in your home as well.
